Tuesday, February 7, 2006 This intermediate course defines what constitutes a medical record, explains why medical records are generally considered to be confidential, and covers exceptions to confidentiality and waiver of confidentiality. A brief overview of the Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will be presented. The instructor will analyze situations involving special treatment by medical records professionals and business or office managers in the health care field. There will also be a review and assessment of issues related to computerized medical records. The goal of this course is to assist participants in obtaining and analyzing medical records, and to understand the privacy rights of clients. Attention will be given to ethical issues related to medical documents for the elderly, children and adolescents, abuse victims, HIV patients, and mental health or substance abuse populations. Handouts will include a medical terms glossary, and a resource sheet for medical research Web sites. Ms. Wortman, has 30 years experience in the medical profession as a registered nurse in hospital, clinical, and private insurance/HMO case management settings, and is now an independent consultant with Legal Nurse Services, San Francisco, CA. She is a practicing legal nurse consultant, nurse case manager, and educator with an ABA approved certificate as a legal nurse from San Francisco State University. She consults for defense cases involving medical malpractice, mesothelioma and personal injury with the San Francisco law office of Gordon & Rees. She has a BA in Psychology from Portland State University in Oregon, and holds an American Nurses Association specialty certification for psychiatric/mental health nursing. |
