This course will focus on the fundamental ethical
issues facing the paralegal profession. There will be an overview of the
unauthorized practice of law, confidentiality, attorney-client
privilege, and the application of ethics rules to technological advances
such as cell phones, e-mail, websites, and research on the Internet. The
NALA Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and the ABA Model
Rules of Professional Conduct, as well as recent case law and ethical
opinions, will be employed as basic references.

Vicki Voisin was President of NALA from 1998–2000 and is
currently serving as Chair of the Advanced Paralegal Certification
Board. She has more than 25 years of experience in the legal field and
currently works in the Charlevoix, MI, offices of Running, Wise & Ford,
PLC. She is the creator and presenter of EthicsBasics, a unique program
designed to raise awareness of ethical concerns by legal professionals
and corporate employees. She is also a nationally recognized author and
speaker on issues related to ethics and to the paralegal profession. She
received the NALA President’s Award in 2003, and has served the State
Bar of Michigan Legal Assistants Section, and the Legal Assistants
Association of Michigan. She has a BS degree from Central Michigan
University. Vicki is also a member of the National Association of
Professional Organizers (NAPO).
