This course addresses the history, background, techniques, and strategies employed in court-related challenges involving the admissibility of expert witness testimony. Discussion will include the role of the expert witness in legal matters, expert discovery, application of a sample “admissibility” test, industry-related guidelines/standards, and associated legal documents. Examination of the paralegal’s role in researching, locating, and working with expert witnesses, along with the paralegal’s role in a “Daubert” challenge, and the impact of precedent setting cases upon the Federal Rules of Evidence applicable to expert witnesses will be covered. Useful handouts will be provided.

Patricia J. Gustin, CP, CFEI, is a freelance paralegal based in Harrisburg, PA who specializes in product liability litigation. She provides paralegal services to law firms, insurance companies and expert witnesses. Over the past 11 years, she has assisted a nationally-recognized expert witness in defending over 450 product liability lawsuits. She is a frequent contributing author for Facts and Findings and other publications. She is a past member of NALA's Continuing Education Committee and a 3-time Member Exchange presenter. She is also the former coordinator of a paralegal education program and continues to educate paralegals through seminars, written works, speaking engagements and volunteer activities.
